The Red Circle (DC Comics 2009-present)

After the announcement made at (I believe) the 2008 San Diego ComicCon that DC had acquired the rights to use the Archie heroes, I started to eagerly await their appearances in DC books. The actual logistics of the deal are a mystery to me, though....if DC is attempting to integrate the characters into the mainstream continuity, does this mean that this new deal with Archie is somehow different than the licensing deal that spawned the !mpact imprint of nearly two decades ago? Does DC own the characters outright now, or are they still licensing them?

Of the products they have released so far, the main features in the two on-going titles The Shield and The Web (i.e., the title features) have impressed me the most. The two back-up centering on the Hangman and Inferno....eh....not so much. The art and storyline of Hangman seems stunted and kinda telegraphed (not to detract from the talents of the creative team behind it) and the Inferno story is just...well,....confusing. The storytelling is chaotic and scattershot. I've read the thing and couldn't honestly tell you what's going on. Possibly another read-through (this time trying to digest the entire storyline at once instead of an issue at a time) will clear things up. Here's hoping that the relaunch of the Fox, Jaguar, Mr. Justice, the Black Hood, and the Comet run a little smoother.

Archie's Weird Mysteries #3

Just a little experiment in sharing that I've conducted:

I took the liberty of snagging pages that had been scanned by FB-DCP from Tales From Riverdale Digest #27 and re-editted them together with a scan of the original cover of Archie's Weird Mysteries #3 (which some of the material in that issue had been reprinted from) and re-organized them into a new .cbz file, adding a tag creditting the original scanners and everyone that's uploaded the original scans, simply because this issue...featuring a rare contemporary appearance of The Mighty Crusaders...has either yet to be scanned or no one (to my knowledge) is sharing...

The Mighty Crusaders #1 (1965)

Here's the first issue of the original Silver Age incarnation of the official Archie Comics superhero team. Imagine a low-rent Avengers or Justice League...

One interesting note that should be made about the 1960s era (usually referred to as the "MLJ", "Mighty Comics", or "Radio Comics" era) Mighty Crusaders is that none other that Jerry Seigel (of Seigel and Shuster, creators of Superman fame) was one of the contributing writers to these books, most of the times uncredited.

Impact Comics Who's Who #1 (Sept. 1991)

I loved the Impact imprint over at DC, and this was one of the more obscure releases that was published....

From Wikipedia:

Impact Comics was an imprint of DC Comics that was aimed at younger audiences. It was begun in 1991 and ended by 1993. (The initial "I" in the logo looked like an exclamation point, but the name of the imprint was not actually !mpact.)

Its titles featured the adventures of altered versions of superheroes licensed from Archie Comics including the Fly, the Comet, the Shield, the Jaguar, the Web, and the Black Hood. Changes included making the new Jaguar a woman and making the Web an organization instead of a solo hero. This was a second attempt to revive the old Archie heroes, the other one being the Red Circle line of comics in the early 1980s.

In an effort to reach out to kids who were not aware of the direct market system, DC Comics attempted to sell Impact Comics titles through newsstands. However, due to internal conflicts, that never happened. The imprint eventually collapsed due to poor sales. A final series The Crucible was initially intended to relaunch the line, but instead served as its finale. Since then, Archie Comics has used some of their superheroes in cameo roles, but the company has yet to utilize them in any significant way.

Lancelot Strong: The Shield #1 & #2 (1983)

From Wikipedia:

In June of 1959, a new Shield was published by Archie that had no connection to the previous version.

Joe Simon and Jack Kirby had been hired by Archie to create characters for a new "Archie Adventure Series" line of superheroes (later known as Mighty Comics). They created a new Shield, whose real identity was Lancelot Strong, who appeared in a new title, The Double Life of Private Strong. Most collectors refer to this Shield as "Lancelot Strong" to differentiate him from the previous one.

Lancelot's scientist father developed a method to create a superhuman by expanding the mind, which he used on his infant son. After his father was killed by foreign agents, Lancelot was adopted by a farm couple and raised as their son. Once he hit his teens, he discovered the truth of his background and his powers: strength, flight, near-invulnerability, vision powers, generate lightning, and a few more. His father had created a patriotic costume for him, and he started off as the new superhero, the Shield. He soon joined the Army, acting like a Gomer Pyle-style country bumpkin, while leading a double life as the Shield (hence the title of his comic). DC cried 'foul', claiming this new Shield was too similar to Superman, so after 2 issues, his comic ended.

He would also appear in a few issues of The Fly (#4, 8, 9). He would not again appear until Archie again revised their superheroes under the Red Circle Comics line of the 80s. There he appeared in the Mighty Crusaders and got his own title Lancelot Strong, Shield. It lasted 2, issues, was retitled Shield-Steel Sterling with the third issue. In that issue he would be killed off, and the title continued as Steel Sterling until issue 7.

Joe Simon, his creator, is the owner of this character. The first issue of The Double Life of Private Strong was reprinted, almost in its entirety, in Blue Ribbon Comics volume 2, issue 5. There have been no attempts at a comprehensive reprint of the original stories and issue 2 still remains unreprinted anywhere.
